AI for writing code

AI coding assistants help developers with tasks such as writing code, debugging, explaining code and preparing tests. GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, OpenAI Codex and ChatGPT are widely used tools in this field. However good the assistant is, responsibility for the generated code lies with the person who uses it.

In brief

  • There are three types of coding assistant: in-editor completion, chat and agents.
  • State the language, version and constraints; break the work into small tasks.
  • Read and test the generated code; the responsibility is yours.
  • Do not share passwords, API keys or customer data.

Note

This field changes quickly: the tools' features, supported editors and terms of use are updated often. This guide gives general information as of October 2026; for details, see the official page of the tool you use.

Using coding assistants properly

  1. Get to know the types of assistant

    • In-editor completion: Suggests the next line or block of code as you type (e.g. GitHub Copilot's code completion).
    • Chat: You type a question, an error message or a piece of code and ask for an explanation and a solution (e.g. ChatGPT, Claude).
    • Agents: Tools that can read the files in a project, make changes across several files and run commands with your approval; they work in the editor (e.g. Cursor) or in the terminal (e.g. Claude Code, OpenAI Codex).

  2. Give the context and the constraints

State the language and version you use (e.g. PHP 7.4), the framework, the database, the code style and the parts that must not be touched. Give the error message exactly as it is, without shortening it. Rather than asking for a large job in one go, break it into small, clear tasks.

  3. Review and test the code

Read the generated code line by line; do not run code you do not understand. Run the tests and try the edge cases. Assistants can sometimes suggest a function or library that does not exist, or write usage that belongs to an old version. When giving agents broad permissions such as deleting files, running commands or accessing a server, work by approving each step and track the changes with version control (e.g. git).

Example prompt

"In a project that uses PHP 7.4 and PDO, write a function that fetches a customer record by email address. The query must use a prepared statement and the function must return null if there is no record. Do not use PHP 8-only syntax. Add a short explanation and two test scenarios below the code."

This prompt clearly states the language and version, the database layer to be used, the security expectation, the return value, what is not allowed and the output format required.

Security

  • Do not share code that contains passwords, API keys, database connection details or customer data; if necessary, replace them with dummy values.
  • Check your company's rules before giving company code to a tool; data terms may differ on business and enterprise plans.
  • Verify that the suggested packages and libraries really exist and are trustworthy.
  • Pay particular attention to security matters such as validation of user input, SQL injection and authorisation checks.
  • Generated code may resemble existing open-source code; pay attention to the licence terms.

Tips for efficient use

  • Learn by having the assistant explain code you do not understand.
  • Have tests written for newly written code; check that the tests really test something.
  • When debugging, write the expected behaviour and the actual behaviour separately.
  • Keep your project rules (version, style, what is not allowed) in a file; many agents can read instruction files in the project root.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone who cannot code develop software with AI?

It is possible for simple scripts and prototypes. However, for software that will be used in production, that processes personal data or that involves money, a review by someone who understands the code is essential.

Which coding assistant is better?

The tools are developing rapidly and changing all the time. Try several and choose the one that suits your language, your editor and the way you work.

The code the assistant suggested does not work; what should I do?

Give the assistant the error message and the expected and actual behaviour exactly as they are; share the relevant file as well if necessary. If it gets stuck in a loop on the same error, break the problem into smaller parts.
